Cooking classes

We will promote positive attitudes to healthy eating through play opportunities and discussions.

We support our children to build their knowledge and understanding of healthy food and making good choices about food through regular opportunities to cook and prepare food.

Cookery supports children to develop their communication and language skills, follow instructions and learn the names of equipment such as a  ‘whisk’. It also supports mathematical development, using scales to weigh ingredients, or counting how many eggs are needed. Furthermore, it develops the children’s fine motor skills, such as stirring, mashing, peeling, slicing or grating.

Through such sessions team will support children to make healthy choices and understand the need for healthy eating.

We ensure that every child is provided with healthy nutritional food. We believe that it helps support and encourage children’s overall learning and development.

Throughout the day, children are provided with breakfast, two snacks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, a cooked meal at lunch time and a light meal at teatime.

Mealtimes should be a happy, social occasion for children and team alike. Positive interactions should be shared at these times and enjoyed. We are committed to offering children healthy, nutritious, and balanced meals and snacks which meet individual needs and requirements.

Zebedees Lunchbox provides the children at Maritime Minis with a variety of delicious, fresh and healthy meals, delivered daily. All other meals are prepared freshly on site by our lunch time assistant. Wherever possible we prepare food from scratch, for example making our own baked beans and hummus.

Our commitment to you

A balanced and healthy breakfast, midday meal, tea and two daily snacks are provided for the children attending a full day at the nursery.  The menus are planned and reflect our cultural diversity. These will be displayed for children and parents to view.

We provide nutritious food at all snack and mealtimes, avoiding large quantities of fat, sugar, salt and artificial additives, preservatives and colourings and menus will include fresh fruit and vegetables every day.

Fresh drinking water will be constantly available and frequently offered to children and babies, milk is offered at snack time or in line with the child’s feeding routine.

Meal and snack times will be organised so that they are social occasions in which children and team participate in small groups, where team will set a good example whilst sitting with the children to show good table manners. During these meal and snack times, children will be also encouraged to use their manners in saying please and thank you and conversation is encouraged. This also helps our children to develop independence through making choices and feeding themselves.

Children will be encouraged to serve themselves at mealtimes when developmentally ready and children are encouraged to try a small piece of everything, with quantities offered taking into account the ages of the children being catered for. Children will be given time to eat at their own pace and not be rushed.

No child is ever left alone when eating / drinking to ensure that there is no risk of choking.

We support families whilst their child is on their weaning journey, working in partnership to support each child to wean onto solid foods successfully
